Rekindle adds apps and games to your Kindle browser

Rekindle is just a web page optimised for the somewhat terrible built-in Kindle browser, but it packs a ton of useful and fun content. It has utilities like notes, flashcards, and a Pomodoro timer, and access to non-Kindle books from Project Gutenberg and Libby.

The games page has everything from Wordle to Doom, because, of course, you can play Doom. I did not do enough testing to report on the effect on battery life, but it is likely to be significant, especially when playing games. The Tamagotchi-esque “Pet” game translates perfectly to the black-and-white Kindle browser. I ended up playing the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Infocom game in the “Interactive Reader,” which felt like something Douglas Adams would have loved.

Some features are available only when logged in with a free account, while others are locked behind a paid subscription, which costs $15 a year or $30 for a lifetime subscription. In comments on the initial Reddit post announcing the site, the developer intended to keep it free. In the four months since then, the project has expanded significantly beyond its initial scope, so the hosting costs and development time have probably skyrocketed.

Everything about Rekindle goes against the main reason a lot of people use an e-reader: staying focused on reading, but it does keep you from picking up your phone, so I’ll call that a win. Rekindle was created for the Scribe, but worked perfectly on my 12th-gen Paperwhite. The code for the project is on GitHub and open-source. To get Rekindle, just go to rekindle.ink in the Kindle browser.
