AI pioneers showcase groundbreaking tech at San Diego conference, paving way for real-world applications

The EDGE AI FOUNDATION Conference brings together technology leaders to demonstrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence applications in San Diego over three days, featuring innovations ranging from facial recognition to voice commands.

Multiple companies presented new AI applications at the event. San Diego-based Qualcomm demonstrated hand gesture recognition technology that identifies specific hand positions and movements. “We’re doing hand gesture recognition you can see the victory sign you can see open palm left hand,” a company representative said.

Several companies showcased advanced facial recognition software at the conference. One presenter explained the technology’s capabilities, stating, “Doing an application for face recognition and because you’re not in our system you’re unknown for us at the moment for now for now,” said a company representative.

Developers are leveraging AI to create three-dimensional maps of photographs through visual processing on specialized processors. One innovator described the potential for miniaturization, explaining, “The bridge of your glasses you could have a tiny chip in there doing all your AI a little bit of a different use case,” said a presenter.

Another presenter detailed how the technology processes visual information in real time. “It’s showing in a three-dimensional space what it is seeing all of the computing is being done on this processor on the back and then recreate that in a three-dimensional environment for computation,” said the presenter.

Companies are also using AI to enhance the user experience in automotive applications. One company demonstrated voice command technology for vehicles, with a representative stating, “If I say, hey V2S open the door, it heard me and can process the voice commands,” said a company spokesperson.

AI technology improves speech recognition in medical devices as well. One company is enhancing hearing aid performance through advanced audio processing. “This is without the speech enhancement this is with the speech enhancement so it reduces the noise and also emphasizes speech and that’s actually currently deployed on devices like hearing aids,” said a representative.

The Edge AI Tech Foundation, the nonprofit organization hosting the event, aims to connect innovators and expand real-world applications of artificial intelligence. Pete Bernard, CEO of the EDGE AI FOUNDATION, said, “There’s thousands of tech companies in San Diego so there’s a high concentration in tech and a lot of innovation.”

Bernard emphasized AI’s potential to improve quality of life and operational efficiency across multiple sectors. “You can grow more crops, be safer on the roads, get better healthcare so you know we like to think of it as tech in the real world that’s having real impact,” said Bernard.

The EDGE AI FOUNDATION conference continues through Thursday, with additional events scheduled in London and Taipei later this year.  For more information: https://www.edgeaifoundation.org/
